Downloadable CE Software

I have already mentioned the 1.1 release of Pocket Internet Explorer, available for download from Microsoft's Windows CE Web pages. Experience with Internet downloadable upgrades to Apple's Newton systems over the last year has shown that this form of distribution is very effective for PDAs. As well as patches, a number of software add ons are available from these pages.

The first patch for Windows CE is already available, from the Casio web site. This is in the form of a downloadable DLL, and corrects a serious problem where a software problem can prevent Cassiopeia models from fully shutting down when the user presses the 'Off' button. In adverse circumstances, this bug will cause the Cassiopeia's batteries to become fully drained, losing all data from the device. This problem affects the Casio and Compaq models, but not the NEC.
