Returning from 2004
by paul on Mar.31, 2011, under Leveling
2004 would have been… Gates/Omens time, I guess, when a lot of people left; EQ2 started, WoW started – and SOE leadership had been a disaster, with GoD so hated by normal players. Â New since then: (continue reading…)

Hot Zones
by paul on Mar.18, 2011, under Hints & Tips, Leveling
What are “Hot Zones”?
These are zones that SOE want to encourage traffic to; in their announcement, they claimed that a Paludal Caverns level of experience could be maintained all the way up to 60. (continue reading…)
Fabled Pet Weapons
by paul on Mar.17, 2011, under Equipment, Hints & Tips
These drop in the Elemental planes, during the Fabled period (typically March 16 – April 16), and are considered among the best, if not the best, weapons for their class for 75-79. (continue reading…)
What to Do and When
by paul on Mar.09, 2011, under Hints & Tips, Leveling
This is a guide for current and returning players, who may be mystified as to what opportunities to advance their characters shouldn’t be missed. As many of these opportunities are from old expansions, and SOE’s crazy mudflation makes many things much easier over time, I will try to give suggestions as to when best to do these things. Everquest II: Starter Areas, 1-20
by paul on Jun.04, 2010, under Everquest II
This is going to be long, as I have put all my thoughts about the EQ2 starter areas into the one post. Now I have levelled to 20+ in ALL the starter areas, so my opinions should at least be consistent. I am typical of a moderately experienced MMO player, with a relatively hard core casual play style – mostly solo, some groups, in other games; experienced in raiding but turned off by the attitudes. Now read on… (continue reading…)
Content: quests or grinds?
by paul on Jun.04, 2010, under Leveling
Since the Secrets of Faydwer expansion, Everquest has been switching from a primarily grinding model to a quest based model like EQ2 and WoW. The difference is where the primary source of experience for levelling comes from, not just progression flags. But there are many different sorts of quests, and EQ (like WoW and EQ2) has gone for single-play, non-repeatable quests, to limit the rate at which experience can be gained. However, when EVERYONE has to complete certain quests to gain access to new areas and join their friends who have already done so, certain issues arise. (continue reading…)
Qeynos, Freeport and Gorowyn: First Impressions
by paul on May.20, 2010, under Everquest II
What brought me back in recent weeks was the news that the next patch to EQ2 would remove the ability to start characters in Qeynos and Freeport (I am not entirely clear on exactly what the change will be). I wanted to run a set through the newbie areas while I still could. (continue reading…)
