Returning from 2004
by paul on Mar.31, 2011, under Leveling
2004 would have been… Gates/Omens time, I guess, when a lot of people left; EQ2 started, WoW started – and SOE leadership had been a disaster, with GoD so hated by normal players. Â New since then: (continue reading…)
Hot Zones

What are “Hot Zones”?
These are zones that SOE want to encourage traffic to; in their announcement, they claimed that a Paludal Caverns level of experience could be maintained all the way up to 60. (continue reading…)
What to Do and When
by paul on Mar.09, 2011, under Hints & Tips, Leveling
This is a guide for current and returning players, who may be mystified as to what opportunities to advance their characters shouldn’t be missed. As many of these opportunities are from old expansions, and SOE’s crazy mudflation makes many things much easier over time, I will try to give suggestions as to when best to do these things. Content: quests or grinds?
by paul on Jun.04, 2010, under Leveling
Since the Secrets of Faydwer expansion, Everquest has been switching from a primarily grinding model to a quest based model like EQ2 and WoW. The difference is where the primary source of experience for levelling comes from, not just progression flags. But there are many different sorts of quests, and EQ (like WoW and EQ2) has gone for single-play, non-repeatable quests, to limit the rate at which experience can be gained. However, when EVERYONE has to complete certain quests to gain access to new areas and join their friends who have already done so, certain issues arise. (continue reading…)

Escape to Norrath – the Everquest Players Guide
People who don’t have a current subscription to Everquest can get a 14 day trial, called Escape to Norrath. It hasn’t always been 14 days, sometimes it may have been a month, and at others it may have been unlimited. Each Station account without an Everquest subscription can take this trial once. Solo experience ranking at 70
by paul on Oct.19, 2009, under Leveling
Following on from the survey I did of level 55 solo spots, I wanted to repeat the exercise for level 70. Â The 55 article was based around using an enchanter with a tank mercenary, which is kind of extreme, but extreme mediocrity, not making any use of the special abilities of an enchanter; in fact, playing the enchanter as if it were a sub-par melee character. Leveling Zones for 55
by paul on Aug.14, 2009, under Leveling
Reworked from my posts in the SOE forum thread: 55+ solo ideas.
One of the benefits of the Hot Zone switching programme is that it forces us to rethink the “best” zones for levelling every few months. Â I have a suspicion that the devs don’t always reset the ZEM back to quite the same as it was before the zone was “hotted”. Â As the current (August 2009) hot zone set hasn’t received a noticeable ZEM boost, it was time to check out my personal rankings for favourite zones. Â (continue reading…)
