Newbie armor

by on Dec.22, 2006, under Equipment

Way back when Everquest started, your first armor was either dropped, or made with tradeskills – banded armor, silk, or made from ruined cat (or bear) hides. As you levelled, there were certain items that were known to be good for your class, until eventually you ended up gearing from raids.

When Luclin was released, the new class, beastlord, had a set of quested (non-tradeskill) armor, but they were the only ones. Other Vah Shir had the quested Ghulam set, and some rewards (weapons) from tradeskill quests.

Then, some time later, after Luclin had been out a while, and starting before Planes of Power, most races and classes were given what has become known as newbie armor quests. These faked the involvement of trade skills, and so most of the quests were written up on EQTraders. But EQTraders eventually decided that these weren’t really tradeskills, and so stopped updating them. Plus some races didn’t have any of these quests (Vah Shir), and new classes for a race didn’t always have them – frogloks, after the move to Rathe Mountains, in particular.

So far, the exceptions are all beastlords, which only had their Luclin quests, and all Vah Shir, apart from berserkers.

There were some high level tradeskills for cultural armor, and a few minor variations like the plate armor made for the Coldain quests – all of which required expensive ingredients and high tradeskills, plus were markedly inferior to equivalent level raid drops (despite being a lot harder to get).

Planes of Power introduced some items that can be quested with tradeable drops in Plane of Knowledge (mask, ring), and the 50+ ornate semi-tradeskill quests, which all involve tradeable components. Again, markedly inferior to drops, even single group drops this time. See EQTraders again for all of this.

Another significant change in PoP was the introduction of recommended and required levels on items.

For lower levels, this was all sad, as mudflation was degrading what was possible for them to reach, and gradually removing all incentive to remain low level even for a short while.

After this, both Lost Dungeons of Norrath (LDoN) and Dragons of Norrath ( DoN) introduced a system of buying items with points earned in group dungeons; the DoN system used crystals that are tradeable in the Bazaar.

The next major change was with Dragons of Norrath. New, lower level, cultural/tradeskills armor was released; see EQTraders. Unfortunately, they only give a general quest outline, and don’t give links to the items themselves, unlike their earlier write ups. Search on Allakhazam for “Journeyman’s” items to find the lowest level DoN culturals. Even the new Drakkin items are listed on EQTraders under DoN, but you should be able to find them (if only in the Bazaar) as crystalweave, crystalskin, crystalwing and crystalscale. EQTraders has the Drakkin recipes under Recipes->Cultural->Drakkin. Required level to use the armor is 15, recommended 20. Skill level to make it is 115 to 139 (for tailoring, anyway); the crystalwing sewing kit and needle need 162 and 132 smithing.

The DoN cultural armors take three augment slots, and special reusable augments can be crafted with either smithing or tailoring for them.

At the same time ( DoN) some items were added as quest/task rewards from PoK; these involve items not covered by the standard newbie quest armor. NPCs involved are: V’Lynn Renloe, Castlen Drewe, and Barrenzin. The good (V’lynn) and evil (Barrenzin) NPCs give you items from your newbie quest armor; the neutral guy (Castlen, next to the soulbinder) gives you the additional items mentioned above. These quests come roughly one per level between 10 and 20.

Finally, The Serpent’s Spine introduced some new quested armors, for all levels. You need to search on “Kimem Saydel” to track these down. Levels for these are 20+; the components can be bought in the Bazaar, and the level 20 items drop in Blightfire.

Necro starting gear (twink)

by on Jul.04, 2005, under Equipment

There’s a relatively recent thread on Necrotalk that gives gear recommendations for level 45. If the necro is genuinely level 45 (or a little higher), then the TSS quest gear from Scout Madru in Goru’kar Mesa will probably replace the visible slots.

This bit is old – 2003, at a guess; but still relevant for lower levels. Taken from the Newbie section of the necro forums, and somewhat edited by me. Where there are alternate selections, they usually cover quite a wide price range. Items that are the same as in the next ‘level’ up are starred.

Necro 9th skullcap

by on Sep.29, 2004, under Equipment, Quests

Starts with Ixpacan at location 50, n1070 in the skorpikis pit in the Overthere. Use the Find window to reach him, this is at the end of one of the east legs of the pit. You will need your 8th skullcap to hand in to him.

After following the conversation, you will be given a 4 slot container, Ixpacan’s Tome. He asks you to collect four items – a brittle bone (once used for reincarnations), a poisoned soul from an angry iksar ghost, something from ‘the burning heat’, and a gem of reflection. The gem the ‘fools in Cabilis probably wouldn’t know how to create’.

In EJ, an angered spirit drops a poisoned soul, in a ruins at 3475, 1290.

The brittle bone is a rare drop in Charasis, seems to be random off any mob or possibly skeletons. It can be obtained in the basement, which makes it reasonably easy to obtain.

If you ask Harbinger Glosk in the Cabilis necro guild about the gem of reflection, he asks for the head of a rogue marauder in a jungle near here. The rogue marauder is in Trakanon’s Teeth at n2040 1545.

For the gem of reflection, you will need mount Death mineral salts, a green goblin skin (both from FM or Nurga/Droga), Spiroc bone dust (Timorous Deep, from spirocs), Essence of Rathe, blue slumber fungus (ground spawn in Lesser Faydark, 1155, 3610), and a vial of pure essence. The vial drops in Firiona Vie from Marinda Flockwings, a drixie. This is for Harbinger Glosk in Cabilis necro guild.

In Skyfire, in the lava lake due north of the Burning Woods zone line is a single “a lava walker”, who drops the final item, a fiery orb.

Combine the four items in Izpacan’s book, and hand it in to him. He will spawn a low 50s mob; kill this, and hand in what you loot from him, to get the 9th skullcap.

I haven’t completed this myself yet, although most details were worked out with the Unsolved Quests board, whose members deserve credit for solving the quest.

Sarnak Courier Cycle in Lake of Ill Omen

by on Apr.18, 2004, under Equipment

a goblin brawler
a sabretooth cat
greater scalebone
a Sarnak youth
a goblin skirmisher
greater skeleton
a Sarnak courier

PH names may not be capitalised as here on track, will have to check. Sometimes a common mob can spawn as the PH; use track to check this. I have seen Iksar brigands and marauders, Sarnak flunkies, sabertooth tigress in the cycle – none of the other mobs, including goblins, so far. The mobs listed above, if they appear, will always be part of a courier cycle, however.

Spawn points are in the area between the windmill and the lake. There are several courier cycles in the area; the ones to the west, closer to the Sarnak fort, are reported not to drop the ring. Two cycles exist between the windmill and the goblin ruins at the lake, one mostly north of the ruins, and one all south of it onto the hill next to the windmill. So far I have only taken a ring from the north of the two cycles.

The best strategy seems to be to look for goblin brawlers and skirmishers first, then greater skeletons/scalebones and sabretooth cats. Sarnak youths (and the occasional flunkie) will be attacked and killed by goblins – as will the courier, if you don’t watch out. Finally chase down the iksars in that valley. Mobs will spawn on the hills to the west, and out the stream to the north, but seem to roam in towards the valley. The exact spawn points seem random, but the northern mobs all spawn at or north of the line of pillars, and the southern spawns are all south of this.

The courier drops… Goblin Gazughi ring, instant clicky invis to animals, essential tool for charm classes.

Magician Quests in the Temple of Solusek Ro

by on Sep.22, 2003, under Equipment

Magicians actually get some decent quests from here, unlike most other classes. Druids and beastlords get none, enchanters and necromancers yield items that are superceded by newbie quest items; but magician focus items are (almost) essential.

Quest giver for the focus items is Vira.

Broom of Trilon

  • Star ruby
  • Griffon feather (West Commonlands or North Karana; may also be a standard vendor item? Arcane Academy, WFP?)
  • a broom (Najena/Feerrott – magicians, darkbone skeletons, alligators)
  • cyclops toes (E Karana, S Karana, Rathe Mountains, Ocean of Tears)

Shovel of Ponz

  • a shovel (as above)
  • Gargoyle eye (Mistmoore, OOT)
  • Hill giant toes (EK, NK, WK, RM, WC, Gornit/OOT)
  • ruby

Torch of Alna

  • a torch (as above)
  • Fire drake scale (Lavastorm)
  • Fire giant toes (SolB, Gornit/OOT)
  • fire emerald

Stein of Ulissa

  • a stein (as above)
  • Mermaid scale (sirens, OOT)
  • ice giant toes (Everfrost, Permafrost, Gornit/OOT)
  • sapphire

Magicians in Najena – 2 in Drelzna room, 2 by signpost, 2-4 in Rathyl anteroom, 2 in Najena’s room, plus 2 in room at end of left passage? Coordinates: (-21,-23), (343,89), (133,-146), (119,-131), (-148,-51), (-11,100), (358,219), (358,173), (-146,-70). Don’t forget the goblin magicians.

Circlet of Mist
ac5 wis3 int3 agi3, light source. For Joyce:

  • Globe of Mist (festering hag, Unrest)
  • Water ring (aqua goblin tidal lord, Dagnor’s Cauldron)
  • Ring of Evoluoy (alligators, Feerrott)
  • sapphire

Clay Bracelet
ac4 mr5, eye of zomm. Rune of Clay x 4: 3 gnome necros in RM (Brindlegrob, Sindlegrob and Findlegrob), and goblin headmaster in OOT. Findlegrob: tower near Lake Rathe zone; the other 2 are in a tower near Feerrott zone.

Earthen Boots
ac5 sta5 hp15, invis vs animals.

  • Stone marker (glyphed guards, Mistmoore)
  • Heart of stone (stone skeleton, RM)
  • Soiled boots (tonta knight, UGuk)

  • cats eye agate

Robe of the Elements
ac9 int4 fr5 cr5, summoning haste II.

need to turn in three with a wooden practice flail bought from Krogar in Shar Vahl; just one talon for the claw beast (plus flail).

Blessed Champions Cape
AC 8, plus wis, cha, one other stat and a faction modifier. Gather 18 poached hides, from Loda Kai poachers and traders, combine in a box from Sentry Ferin six at a time for a Hero’s Shroud. Hand in one shroud to ?? to get a cape pattern (it is returned); combine two shrouds, the pattern, and a shadeling silk thread to get a Champions Cape. Hand in to Priestess Bast with three drops of Loda Kai blood to get the Blessed Cape. You probably need ally faction to do the turn ins.

Kael Manor for Armor

by on Jan.27, 2003, under Equipment

from eqclerics board:
Kael Manor Cycle is, IMHO, the fastest way to get your plate wearing classes geared for moving up to HoT…. And the fact of the matter is you really only need your plate classes (ie. warriors first) equipped before you move into HoT.

Yes it would be nice to get the silk wearers, chain wearers, and leather wearers some armor too, but in reality the casters and priests are going to be hiding from the AE’s in HoT using walls. And their time will come in HoT. If your guild still balks at only doing the manor (or you need a bit of +CoV work) then go 2 Manors then 1 Arena runs.

If your in a guild that is approaching the velious armor stage in it’s development then only focus on Kael long enough to get 2 to 4 main tanks fully or near fully equipped (it will help alot). Divide this other time by improving your weapons for all melee classes by farming Tawro and Radiir in Umbral every time you possibly can. The weapons they drop, while maybe not uber in some eyes, are tremendous increases in dps for guilds at this stage. The increased dps from the UP weapons plus having a few tanks equipped in Thurg armor will make HoT easier and it is not a huge time sink. Figure on about 2 good solid weeks doing the above 2 items and you should be ready for your initial run at HoT.
